Lucky Ali responds with a tongue-in-cheek apology after calling Javed Akhtar “never original and ugly”

Singer-songwriter Lucky Ali has stirred fresh headlines after issuing a tongue-in-cheek apology on X (formerly Twitter), days after his sharp reaction to lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar’s resurfaced video sparked widespread attention.

Ali’s latest post read, “what I meant was that arrogance is ugly.... it was a mistaken communique' on my part.... monsters may have feelings too and I apologise if I hurt anyone’s monstrosity....” The statement, laced with sarcasm, comes amid the ongoing social media debate surrounding Akhtar’s old remarks from a public interaction.

The controversy began when a clip featuring Javed Akhtar discussing a scene from the iconic 1975 film Sholay went viral. In the video, Akhtar recalled a moment where Hema Malini’s character, Basanti, speaks to Lord Shiva, and questioned whether such a scene could be written in today’s climate of heightened religious sensitivity. During the same interaction, he reportedly commented, “Don’t become like Muslims. Make them like yourself. You are becoming like Muslims,” which quickly drew criticism online.

Lucky Ali, reacting to the resurfaced footage, had earlier posted, “Don’t become like Javed Akhtar, never original and ugly as f**,”* a remark that divided netizens — some applauding his candour while others called his response unnecessarily harsh.

Following the backlash to both statements, Javed Akhtar maintained that he was “unfazed” by the controversy, asserting that he has long been targeted for his outspoken opinions and has even required police protection in the past.
